Free PC giveaway: Report Back - 30 October 2007

SAVO teamed up with Serco, Southwark Council, Maxitech and OFFERS/Ex-IT to distribute over 100 recycled PCs to SAVO members.

The first of six planned giveaway days, the event was held at the Learning and Business Centre on Cator Street, Peckham.

The scheme was part of a three-month programme to improve the ICT provisions of Southwark's front-line organisations and improve their service delivery by automating and streamlining their business functions. The PCs were provided by the council and Serco as part of their combined Corporate and Social Responsibility strategy.

Cllr Columba Blango, Southwark Council Executive Member, Equality & Community, commented: 'The initiative, in partnership with Serco and Maxitech, is vital because it helps strengthens our relationships with voluntary and community groups and promotes the sustainable use of resources. The voluntary sector is made up of around 1,600 different organisations, groups and projects. Distributing the computers to the community will help create new skills in the community and support the use of information technology.'

Kevin Lavery, chief executive, Serco Solutions commented: 'Serco has worked with the council for more than six years and we are committed to achieving social outcomes for the council and its citizens. This initiative is just one of many that we have planned to help empower the community and generate wider investment into the Borough.'

    Measles is back

Measles is back and Southwark Primary Care Trust launches campaign to raise awareness of importance of protecting children with MMR vaccine

Measles is back with a vengeance and that is why Southwark PCT is advising parents of children, aged between 1 and 18, to visit or speak to their GP, health visitor or practice nurse if their child has not had two doses of the MMR vaccination.

Over 600 cases of this highly infectious disease have been reported in London, mainly in North East London, and it is only a matter of time before children in Southwark are affected too.

As part of a local campaign to raise awareness of the need to vaccinate children, GPs in Southwark have been asked to write to parents of children registered at their practice to ensure they are given their MMR vaccination as soon as possible. The MMR vaccine is the best way to protect against measles, mumps and rubella.

    The Education Discussion Group

The Education Discussion Group (EDG) is a community-led network, facilitated by SAVO's BME Networks Coordinator, Claudine Bongo. The network is for projects and organisations delivering youth and education related services.

The group has been going for almost 15 months, with the following aims

    1. To create opportunities for a positive impact on the way parents/carers relate to schools
    2. To encourage greater interaction between parents/carers and their children on one hand, and parents/carers and schools on the other
    3. To empower community and voluntary groups to take positive action to play a greater and stronger role for advocacy and for a better understanding of the educational system by members of Black, Asian, Minority Ethnics and Refugee (BAMER) communities.

This is done through awareness-raising on specific issues, facilitating access to information and mainstream service providers, campaigning, and information sharing.

The group is currently developing a project to create a fact-sheet for use by parents which will provide information on specific issues, as well as contact details, roles and remits of community/Voluntary and statutory agencies likely to help in addressing those issues.

The fact-sheet aims to be a practical tool that parents/carers can refer to in dealing with specific concerns in terms of their children's education. It will empower them and give them the confidence to monitor educational achievements, gain understanding of the educational system, provide support to their children, and know how to discuss issues with schools, teachers, head teachers and the education authority.
